A shared account gives everyone in a group—a couple, a set of roommates, a travel crew—an identical, real-time view of shared spending. Every expense logged by any member appears instantly for everyone, the running balance updates automatically, and settle-up is one tap instead of a conversation. Your personal account remains completely separate.

Create a shared account

1

Open Accounts

Tap Accounts in the bottom navigation.
2

Tap New shared account

Select New shared account and give it a name—for example, “Alex & Sam” or “Brooklyn Apartment”.
3

Invite members by email

Enter the email addresses of the people you want to add. Each person receives an invitation. Once they accept, they have full access to the shared account.
4

Set the split rule (optional)

Choose a default split method: equal, proportional, or exact amounts. This can be changed at any time and overridden on individual expenses.
You can create multiple shared accounts—one for your partner, a separate one for roommates, another for a group trip. Each account has its own ledger and balance.

How the shared ledger works

Once the account is set up, every expense logged to it becomes visible to all members immediately.

Who paid

Each expense records the member who paid. The ledger shows the full history of who covered what.

Who owes

Dongip calculates each member’s running balance automatically. You always know who owes whom and how much.

Real-time sync

Log an expense on your phone and it appears on your partner’s phone within seconds—no manual sharing needed.

Settle up

Tap Settle up to see the minimum number of transfers needed to zero out the balance. Pay outside Dongip (bank transfer, cash, etc.) and mark it settled.

Keeping personal and shared expenses separate

Shared accounts only track what you explicitly log there. Your personal expenses stay in your personal account and are never visible to other members of a shared account.
A practical rule: if both of you benefit from the expense, log it to the shared account. If only you benefit, log it to your personal account. Write the rule in the account description so everyone agrees on it from the start.
When bank sync is active, imported transactions default to your personal account. To move a transaction to a shared account, open it and change the account assignment.

Log a shared expense

1

Switch to the shared account

Tap the account selector at the top of the Expenses screen and choose the shared account.
2

Add the expense

Tap + and fill in the amount, category, and any notes. The payer defaults to you—change it if someone else paid.
3

Confirm the split

Review how the expense is split among members. Adjust if the default split rule doesn’t apply to this expense.
4

Save

All members see the expense immediately.

Analytics inside shared accounts

The shared account includes a summary view showing:
  • Total spent together for the current and past months
  • Spending by category across all members
  • Per-member breakdown — how much each person has paid and owes
  • Trend charts comparing spending month over month
Analytics inside shared accounts only reflect expenses logged to that account. Personal expenses from individual members are not included.

Add or remove members

Open the shared account’s Settings to invite new members or remove existing ones. Removing a member stops them from seeing new transactions, but the historical ledger is preserved.
Only the account creator can remove members. Removing a member does not delete the expenses they logged—those remain in the shared ledger.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. You can be a member of multiple shared accounts at the same time—one with your partner, one with roommates, one for a trip. Each has its own separate ledger.
No. Members of a shared account can only see transactions logged to that shared account. Your personal account is never visible to anyone else.
The balance at the time of removal is preserved in the ledger. You can still reference it to settle outstanding amounts outside Dongip.
Bank-synced transactions import to your personal account by default. You can reassign individual transactions to a shared account after they import.
